|
|
Iv started building my second Sport Coupe. This one is going to be powered by a stroked 351w with a c-4 behind it. It will have a homebuilt full chassis with ladder bars in rear and tubular control arms up front . I'll be building custom headers using flanges cut on the waterjet machine that I operate at work. I will be cutting many parts for this car with the waterjet.
Here is the MDNANGL2 after bring her home.
She was bought on ebay for $150something back in 2003. Its been a slow start with buying a house and all.
Anyway, here the back half has been cut out.
here Iv started removing the dash, I'll be molding it so I can make a fiberglass one for the car.
I also removed it to make it easier to chop the top.
no more dash...
Now to tackle the top. I used some duck tape as a straight edge along the rear pillars. This gave me the same width on both sides. I braced both the windshield and the rear glass area.
I made cuts across the bottom and along the top corners of the windshield. I just pushed the roof back instead of cutting the top down ( alot more work ).
Plus this will rake the windshield back for better aerodynamics. Not to mention a kooler look. And I'll still be able to use the stock windshield.
Here is the passanger cowl panel and the templete that I used to make it from.
Once the weather dries up, I'll roll her outside and get some pics from the side.
Im also making plans to section a few inch out of the body. I want to give her a nice wedge shape.
Stay tuned, more to come
Charlie

| Man this is going to be one insane ride! I am really inpressed with your ingenuity and vision. I don't think that I've ever seen a chopped and channeled Fairlane before. Can't wait to see your progress on this project. Keep up the great work. |

Im planning on making a fiberglass dash for the MDNANGL2 car. I was wondering if I should go ahead and make a mold of the stock dash to sell as a replacement and then make another mold after I make my mod's to the dash. I'll be removing the glovebox door and heater vent among other mods for the MDNANGL2 dash.
Think anyone would be interested in a fiberglass replacement dash??

|
|
I finally had some time to do a little work on MDN2.. Rear Bumper Mod...
This was first done on MDNANGL . I was once pulled over after a long cruze and was told by a cop that it looked like a full fiberglass RACE car driving down the street.
Ok, moving on..
After taking some time to strip the chrome off the rear bumper,
I then marked the center of the bumper using the trusty duck tape again to get a nice straight cut line on either side of the tape.
Once I had the bumper cut, I trued up the edges and tacked the pieces to the car with some help from my youngest daughter Paige.
Then I took the two smaller pieces that were cut out of the center and positioned them behind the two larger sections and tacked them into place.
Tomorrow after work I'll check for overall straightness and finish welding the bumper to the body. I will also take the grinder and widen the opening for the license plate.
PS. you can see in these photos that I already filled in the gas filler door. _________________ as the clock strikes midnight

|
|
Iv been working on MDN 2 most of the day .. I finished reworking the drivers side cowl panel. I didnt like how it looked.
I used my pick to massage the area of the cowl panel near the door to match the radius of the door. I'll claen this up with a skin layer of bondo later. Now if only I had a English Wheel. (hint hint Pops!! LOL)
I also finished patching the top of the drivers side front pillar.
notice the lack of a rain gutter. My dad (Pops) and I did the same thing to the Orginal MDNANGL. Looks really clean and smooth with the Lexan windows installed.
I started work on patching the rear roof pillars as well. Here is how the lower passanger side pillar looks with just the corner section tacked in place. You can see about a inch of space (hole) where the corner was relocated. This was done because the section that was removed from the pillar was wider at the bottom of the cut and narrower at the top of the cut.
On the drivers side a cut a small scrap piece of sheet metal and formed it to fit in the "hole".. I ground the welds down and did a little hammer work to get it to blend the lower window lip to the side of the pillar. I'll do the same to the passanger side.

Great pics Charlie. The step-by-step format you use is like Autobody 101.
This is gonna be one very special car when you get done.

Have you thought about shortening the wheelbase like the mid 60's altered dragracers? ( My dad was asking me) _________________ Rawr? |

No, I never really liked how those cars looked. Im just doing something like a ProMod drag/street car theme. I want to give it a low, wedge shape look. Im still thinking on how I want to do the nose of the car.

|

Well, Iv been at it again. Here are some pics of the body being channeled, OOPS, sectioned.
I want to give the car a wedge shape. I'll be cutting more from the front of the body(3") then the rear of the body(1/2"). I have never heard of anyone sectioning a body this way, we'll see how it comes out.
This is the inside body bracing. You can see how low buck this build is, I had to use what ever material
I had around the garage to make the brace out of (round, and square stock and angle iron). And Iv done most of the work on the body out in the driveway.
I removed just over two inches from the front portion.
these are the pieces I removed from the passanger side.
To get the wedge shape Im after, I removed 3/4" at the door jam and 1/2 at the wheel well.
I braced the rear quarter window area just to make sure the body will remain strong.
Here is most of the scrap taken from the body. Note the Saw-z-All blades. Sectioning is NOT nice to Saw-z-All blades. I'll gussit and brace the body a little more then remove the supports. After that, I'll start on the doors and fenders. _________________ as the clock strikes midnight

|

The gusseting is finished
The body is sturdy now and almost looks normal. Next I'll start on the doors and fenders.
Also Im getting more of the garage cleaned up. Iv been moving stuff out to the shed and reorganizing the shelves. Then I'll bring MDN2 back in the garage, line her up, and get started on the chassis.
The rest of the firewall will be removed when I start building the chassis. Im going to leave it be for now to help keep the body square.

Iv started working on the chassis. I bought an old Alston Comp. chassis from a buddy awhile back to help him out $$wise. So, I finally decided to go ahead and use the frame rails and build the cage to fit the body. This will help the budget and get the build a little farther along in shorter time. I'll post some pics shortly.
I'll start work on sectioning the doors and fenders after I get the chassis rolling and the body hung on the frame. Then I'll be able to move her in and out of the garage.
Cheers
